Thank You, Jeeves
Bertie Wooster takes up the banjolele. Jeeves gives notice. And the greatest partnership in comic literature is tested as never before.
P.G. Wodehouse’s first full-length Jeeves novel is a masterpiece of mayhem, a story about a musical instrument, a country cottage, a pair of American gangsters, and the one man who can fix everything, even after his master has driven him away.
Bertie Wooster, in a moment of enthusiasm, has taken up the banjolele. He practices constantly. Jeeves, a man of exquisite taste and a deep appreciation for quiet, cannot endure the noise. He resigns. Bertie, hurt but defiant, retreats to a country cottage in Dorset, where he plans to practice in peace. He is joined by his friend “Chuffy” Chuffnell, who is in love with a beautiful American girl, Pauline Stoker. Pauline happens to be Bertie’s former fiancée. Her father happens to be a millionaire. And two American gangsters happen to be hiding out in the cottage next door. Everything goes wrong. Bertie is arrested. The cottage burns down. And Jeeves, who has been watching from the wings, returns just in time to save the day.
This is Wodehouse at his most rollicking and inventive: the first novel-length adventure of Bertie and Jeeves, featuring all the wit, warmth, and flawless plotting that made Wodehouse a legend. Thank You, Jeeves is pure joy from start to finish.
