The doctor who saw everything—simply told.

Anton Chekhov was a groundbreaking playwright and short-story writer—as well as an environmentalist, statistician, and medical doctor—who changed the face of theater and influenced many of our greatest modern authors. In Simply Chekhov, Russian literature scholar Carol Apollonio presents a thematic exploration of Chekhov's life and works that avoids pretension and jargon, offering the reader an accessible and engaging introduction to one of the world's most renowned literary figures.

Apollonio traces Chekhov's development from his early comic sketches (written under pseudonyms to support his family while he studied medicine) to his mature masterpieces: the stories "The Lady with the Dog," "Ward No. 6," "The Darling," and "Gooseberries," and the plays The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard. She explores Chekhov's signature techniques: the indirect action that happens offstage, the dialogue that circles around what cannot be said, the mingling of comedy and tragedy so subtle that audiences often laugh at the wrong moments. She also examines Chekhov's medical training and how his clinical eye for human frailty shaped his compassion for his characters—and his refusal to judge them.

This is Apollonio at her most lucid and inviting: a guide to the writer who showed that nothing happening in a play can be the most dramatic thing of all, and that a story about a dog can break your heart without your ever quite understanding why.
