A poor boy’s heart, a rich girl’s world, a hard‑won right to call life good.

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson’s Øvind, translated by Sivert and Elizabeth Hjerleid, is a tender, quietly luminous story of country life in Norway, where one poor boy’s fate is shaped by love, pride, and the long work of becoming good.

Born on a small, windswept holding beneath the richer farms, Øvind grows up with a quick mind, a vulnerable heart, and a sharp awareness of everything his family lacks. His bond with Marit—the clever, high‑spirited girl from the prosperous farm above—begins in childhood games and teasing, then deepens into a love strained by class, gossip, and the expectations of watchful neighbors. As Øvind seeks schooling, stumbles through jealousy and shame, and slowly earns his place in the village, he must learn to master not only his circumstances but himself. In the Hjerleids’ clear, faithful translation, Øvind turns fields, seasons, and simple customs into a moral landscape, showing how character is tilled as patiently as the soil and how a single choice can shape a lifetime.

This is Bjørnson at his most tender and uplifting: a story about resilience, gratitude, and the enduring power of a positive spirit. Øvind reminds us that happiness is not a destination—it is a way of seeing the road.
