Fish Preferred
A butler who knows too much. A memoir that could destroy polite society. A prize-winning sow who holds the key to everything. And the third full-length romp through the glorious chaos of Blandings Castle.
P.G. Wodehouse’s third Blandings novel is a masterpiece of comic mayhem—a story about memoirs, pigs, false teeth, and the one man who can untangle it all, provided no one asks him to do anything too strenuous.
The Honourable Galahad Threepwood, Lord Emsworth’s scandalous younger brother, has decided to write his memoirs. The book contains every secret, every indiscretion, every prawn-related disaster from a lifetime of youthful folly. Everyone wants the manuscript destroyed—particularly Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe, Lord Emsworth’s neighbor and rival, who would do anything to keep the story of the prawns buried in the past. But the memoir isn’t the only problem. A chorus girl disguised as an heiress. A double-dealing detective. A stolen prize-winning sow. A crazy ex-secretary named Baxter who throws flowerpots through windows at three in the morning. And Lord Emsworth himself, who only wants to be left alone with his pig, the Empress of Blandings, and could not care less about the fate of English civilization.
This is Wodehouse at his most gloriously silly and structurally perfect: a novel in which every plot thread weaves into every other, every sentence sparkles, and every reader finishes with a smile. Fish Preferred (published in the UK as Summer Lightning) is pure Wodehouse—and pure joy.
