Jarndyce and Jarndyce. A lawsuit so old that no one remembers how it began. A fog so thick it swallows London. And a mystery that will take your breath away.

Charles Dickens's masterpiece of social critique is also his most ingenious novel—a detective story, a romance, and a blistering attack on the English legal system, all wrapped in a fog that never quite lifts.

The case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce has ground through the Court of Chancery for generations, devouring fortunes and driving litigants mad. Two young wards of the court, Richard Carstone and Ada Clare, wait for its resolution, unaware that the lawsuit will destroy them. Their guardian, the generous John Jarndyce, tries to protect them from afar. But the fog of Chancery reaches everywhere. Meanwhile, Lady Dedlock, a beautiful and bored aristocrat, hides a secret that connects her to a poor law writer named Nemo—and to a relentless detective named Inspector Bucket, who will not rest until he uncovers the truth. As the lawsuit consumes everyone in its path, Dickens asks: What happens when justice itself becomes unjust?

This is Dickens at his most ambitious and thrilling: a novel about the law's cruelty, the heart's resilience, and the hope that even in the bleakest house, a fire can still burn. Bleak House is widely considered his greatest achievement.

About the Author

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was an English novelist, journalist, and social critic, widely regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. Born in Portsmouth, he endured a childhood of poverty and forced labor in a blacking factory after his father was imprisoned for debt—experiences that shaped his lifelong commitment to social reform. Bleak House (1853) is considered by many critics to be his finest novel, praised for its intricate plotting, narrative complexity (alternating between third-person and first-person narration), and scathing critique of the Court of Chancery. His other major works include Oliver Twist (1837), David Copperfield (1850), Hard Times (1854), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and Great Expectations (1861). Dickens died of a stroke in 1870 and is buried in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey.
