In recent months, Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform has become increasingly difficult to navigate for many self-publishers. We, as publishers who have been using Amazon's platform since 2016, have found ourselves facing arbitrary decisions that put our business in jeopardy. This situation is not unique—many others are experiencing similar challenges as they attempt to make a living from publishing on the platform.
Since 2016, we have been loyal users of KDP, steadily growing our catalog and representing multiple authors. Over the years, our business has flourished thanks to Amazon’s platform, which played a crucial role in helping us reach readers. However, over the past several months, our experience has drastically changed.
Arbitrary and Unexplained Content Blocking
The first major issue we faced was the blocking of several books, primarily new annotated editions of public domain works. Initially, many of these titles were accepted without any problems. But suddenly, a growing number of them were rejected without explanation. When we reached out to Amazon to seek guidance on why the books were being blocked, we were met with silence—no insight was provided. Left to figure it out on our own, we decided to shift course and stopped publishing these types of books, worried that continuing might lead to the termination of our account.
This inconsistency became glaringly obvious in specific cases. For instance, our Kindle editions of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises are still available for sale in the Kindle store. Yet their paperback counterparts—identical in every respect, down to the periods, commas, and exclamation points—were inexplicably blocked.
The situation escalated further when we updated a fresh ePub file for a title that had been listed on KDP since 2016. Instead of simply updating the existing listing, the book was removed entirely, signaling a deeper issue within KDP’s system. Attempts to clarify these actions led only to generic responses directing us to Amazon’s vague and broadly worded terms of service, offering no concrete explanation of what violations had occurred or how we could remedy them.
This lack of transparency and consistency underscores significant problems within KDP’s processes, leaving publishers like us uncertain and unsupported in navigating the platform.

Retaliatory Account Termination
The situation escalated when our KDP account was terminated. The justification given? We allegedly maintained a duplicate account. This claim was categorically false; we have only ever operated a single account. The termination of our account appeared to be retaliatory, particularly after we had raised concerns about the lack of communication regarding the book bans.
For us, as publishers who have invested so much time and effort into building a presence on the platform, being locked out without due process is devastating. The lack of clear explanation or fair opportunity to dispute the decision raises serious concerns about whether these actions were taken to silence publishers who simply seek clarification.

Appeal and Resolution – But Not the End
After submitting several appeals to reverse the decision, we eventually received an email several hours later stating that they had terminated the account in error. While this may seem like a resolution, we remain wary. Given the lack of transparency, the vague reasoning behind the actions, and the ongoing disruption to our business, we don't believe this is the end of the matter. The fear of further arbitrary decisions still looms large.
Our story is a reminder of the larger issue at hand. While the account has been reinstated, the underlying problem—Amazon's lack of clear communication, transparency, and due process—remains unresolved. This draconian approach harms not just us, but the many authors we represent and all those who rely on KDP for their livelihood.

The Impact on Independent Publishers and Authors
The consequences of these actions are not limited to us alone. As publishers who represent many authors, our ability to operate and distribute content on KDP is crucial to our business and the success of the authors we work with. Amazon's arbitrary actions affect not only us but also the livelihoods of the authors we represent. These sudden and unexplained removals of content disrupt our business and harm the authors who depend on the platform for visibility and revenue.
As the dominant player in the self-publishing industry, Amazon holds immense power over independent publishers and authors. While the platform has provided incredible opportunities, its market dominance leaves these creators with few alternatives when things go wrong.
A Call for Accountability
We are not alone in our frustration. Many others have reported similar issues with KDP, ranging from unexplained content removals to account suspensions without clear justification. While Amazon continues to improve its platform, it’s clear that stronger measures need to be taken to address the concerns of its users.
There are several actions Amazon can take to address this situation:
- Provide Clearer Communication: Every time a book is blocked or an account is suspended, Amazon needs to provide specific, detailed explanations. Vague references to terms of service leave authors and publishers confused and unable to fix the problem.
- Implement a Transparent Dispute Resolution Process: Amazon must create a fair, transparent, and accessible process for authors and publishers to appeal decisions. This process should involve timely responses, clear guidelines, and a thorough understanding of the reasoning behind actions taken
- Avoid Retaliatory Measures: Authors and publishers should never feel that their accounts are being targeted simply for seeking clarification or appealing decisions. Amazon must ensure that actions are not punitive in nature and that fair processes are followed.
A Path Forward for Fairness and Transparency
The recent actions taken against our KDP account have had devastating consequences. These issues go beyond the individual and represent a broader problem that affects many independent publishers and authors around the world. While Amazon’s platform has provided opportunities, the lack of due process and transparency has eroded the trust many have placed in the company.
Today’s Amazon seems to be increasingly adversarial toward authors and publishers—a troubling trend that smacks of bad business. After all, it is we, the creators, they should be bending over backwards to support, as it is our content that fuels their platform. While we understand and agree with Amazon’s pro-customer stance, this approach should not be so unduly lopsided that it exacts a cost on the creators—the very engine driving their marketplace.
Even after Amazon rescinded its erroneous termination of our account, many of our books remain blocked. Worse yet, there is no recourse to address the opaque and vague issues Amazon raised during this ordeal. This lack of transparency leaves us hesitant to publish new books for fear of retaliation—whether intentional or the result of an AI bot’s flawed decision-making process. The truth is, we may never know because Amazon remains an inscrutable black box in its business practices.
To remedy the situation, Amazon must take responsibility for the way it handles account terminations, content blocking, and communication with users. Publishers and authors rely on KDP for their livelihood, and any changes to the platform should not come at the expense of their businesses.
It is time for Amazon to listen to the concerns of its publishers and take meaningful steps to address the lack of clarity and due process. If other authors or publishers are experiencing similar challenges, it is important for them to speak out and advocate for better practices. Only by doing so can the self-publishing ecosystem work toward a fairer and more just environment for everyone involved. Our journey may have led to a temporary resolution, but the fight for transparency and fairness is far from over.
A Big Change Is Needed
Because of the ongoing issues we and many others face, we’ve started a petition demanding significant changes in Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing practices. This petition is our call for Amazon to adopt clearer communication, fairer policies, and a more transparent process. Please take a moment to support our mission for change by signing our petition here. Together, we can work toward ensuring a more just and transparent platform for independent publishers and authors.
