Little Nell. The most heartbreaking child in English literature. And the novel that made a nation weep.

Charles Dickens's fourth novel is a tale of innocence pursued by evil—a picaresque journey through the dark corners of England, and the book that caused readers to storm the docks of New York, begging for news of Nell's fate.

Little Nell Trent lives with her grandfather in his dusty, cluttered curiosity shop. The old man has a secret: he gambles obsessively, hoping to win a fortune for Nell. But he falls into the clutches of the grotesque, loathsome moneylender Daniel Quilp—a villain as memorable as Fagin or Bill Sikes. When Quilp seizes the shop, Nell and her grandfather flee London, wandering through the English countryside as beggars. They encounter puppet shows, traveling waxworks, and kind strangers—but they cannot outrun Quilp's shadow. As Nell's health fades, Dickens builds toward an ending that remains one of the most famous (and infamous) in all of literature.

This is Dickens at his most sentimental and most powerful: a novel about the fragility of goodness, the cruelty of greed, and the love that binds a child to a broken old man. The Old Curiosity Shop made Dickens a global celebrity—and broke the hearts of a generation.

About the Author

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was an English novelist, journalist, and social critic, widely regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. Born in Portsmouth, he endured a childhood of poverty and forced labor in a blacking factory after his father was imprisoned for debt—experiences that shaped his lifelong commitment to social reform. The Old Curiosity Shop was published serially in Master Humphrey's Clock from 1840 to 1841. The novel was an instant sensation, and when the ship carrying the final installment arrived in New York, readers rushed to the docks shouting, "Is Nell dead?" The ending remains one of the most debated in English literature. His other major works include Oliver Twist (1837), David Copperfield (1850), Bleak House (1853), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and Great Expectations (1861). Dickens died of a stroke in 1870 and is buried in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey.
