A soldier’s return. A promise that binds. A love that destroys.

In The Hero, W. Somerset Maugham explores the painful clash between duty, honor, and desire. When James Parsons returns home from the Boer War as a celebrated hero, he is expected to marry the devoted Mary, the girl who has waited faithfully for him. But during his time away, James has fallen deeply in love with another woman. Trapped between his sense of obligation to his family, his fiancée, and the village that idolizes him, James struggles with the growing realization that living up to everyone’s expectations may cost him his happiness—and his soul.

Written with Maugham’s signature elegance, psychological acuity, and subtle irony, this early novel examines the heavy burden of societal expectations and the personal cost of living a lie. The Hero (1901) reveals the young Maugham already mastering the themes of love, duty, and human weakness that would define his later masterpieces.
