The Explorer
A man of action. A love that defies society. The heavy price of honor.
In The Explorer, W. Somerset Maugham tells the story of Alec Mackenzie, a brave and determined explorer who returns to England after years of daring expeditions in the African wilderness. There, he falls deeply in love with Lucy, a gentle and idealistic young woman. Their romance is threatened by the rigid expectations of Edwardian society and by dark secrets from Alec’s past that begin to surface, forcing him to choose between love, duty, and personal integrity.
Written with Maugham’s signature elegance, psychological insight, and subtle irony, this early novel explores themes of adventure, honor, love, and the conflict between personal freedom and social convention. The Explorer (1907) showcases the young Maugham already developing the sharp character studies and moral complexity that would define his later masterpieces.
