The Dead Command
The tyranny of the past. Forbidden love. A rebellion against the dead.
In The Dead Command (Los Muertos Mandan), Vicente Blasco Ibáñez tells the dramatic story of Jaime Febrer, the last descendant of an ancient Majorcan noble family fallen on hard times. Trapped by poverty and the oppressive weight of ancestral traditions, Jaime defies the prejudices of his island society when he falls in love with a woman from the Chueta (descendant of converted Jews) community—a union forbidden by centuries-old social barriers. As the “dead” command the living through outdated honor codes and superstition, Jaime must choose between loyalty to his dying lineage and the freedom to live and love on his own terms.
This powerful novel blends social realism, psychological depth, and passionate storytelling in one of Blasco Ibáñez’s most compelling works set in the Balearic Islands.
