A princess disguised as a boy. A husband tricked into betrayal. A lost prince raised by wolves. And a villain who almost gets away with everything.

Shakespeare's late romance is a glorious mess—and that is exactly why readers love it. Cymbelinethrows together jealous lovers, wicked stepmothers, poisoned potions, miraculous resurrections, and a last-act reveal that ties every loose knot in the most satisfying way imaginable.

King Cymbeline of Britain has banned his daughter Imogen from marrying the man she loves—the poor but worthy Posthumus. Instead, she must wed her cruel, conniving stepbrother Cloten. Imogen defies her father, marries Posthumus in secret, and is banished. But the trouble has only begun. In Italy, a villain named Iachimo wagers Posthumus that he can seduce Imogen. When he fails, he sneaks into her bedchamber while she sleeps, steals her bracelet, and notes a mole on her breast. Posthumus, convinced of her infidelity, orders his servant to murder her. What follows is a wild ride through caves, battlefields, and Roman invasion—all before Shakespeare pulls off one of his most audacious happy endings.

This is Shakespeare at his most playful and forgiving: a play about jealousy, forgiveness, and the stubborn belief that love can survive anything. Cymbeline is not perfect—but its imperfections are part of its charm.

About the Author

William Shakespeare (1564–1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, he moved to London and became a shareholder in the Lord Chamberlain's Men (later the King's Men). Over the course of his career, he wrote approximately 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and several narrative poems. His works—including Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth—have been translated into every major language and performed more often than any other playwright in history. Often called "the Bard of Avon," Shakespeare's influence on literature, theater, and the English language itself is immeasurable.
