They survived the trenches. Now they must survive peace.

In The Road Back, Erich Maria Remarque continues the story he began in All Quiet on the Western Front. As World War I ends, a group of young German soldiers returns home, expecting joy and normalcy. Instead, they find a broken country, economic hardship, political unrest, and a society that no longer understands them. Struggling with trauma, alienation, and the loss of purpose, they attempt to rebuild their lives — only to discover that the war has changed them forever, and the world they left behind no longer exists.

With powerful realism and deep compassion, Remarque explores the devastating psychological and emotional cost of war on a generation of young men. A poignant and powerful sequel, The Road Back stands as one of the most important anti-war novels of the 20th century.
