The most hated book ever written by a Founding Father. A passionate, fearless attack on organized religion. And a defense of the right to think for yourself.

Thomas Paine's final major work is not a denial of God—it is a rejection of superstition, priestcraft, and the claim that any human institution can speak for the divine.

The Age of Reason was written in two parts: the first in 1794, while Paine was imprisoned in France and awaiting execution; the second in 1795, after his release. Paine argues that revelation is only valid for the person who first receives it—everyone else must take it on faith, and faith is not evidence. He rejects the Bible as a human document, full of contradictions, absurdities, and immorality. He celebrates the natural world as the only true revelation of God: "The Word of God is the creation we behold." He calls for religious tolerance, freedom of conscience, and the right to question everything.

This is Paine at his most courageous and controversial: a book that cost him his reputation, his friends, and nearly his life. The Age of Reason was denounced from pulpits, burned by public hangmen, and used to discredit Paine for two centuries. It also inspired generations of freethinkers, secularists, and ordinary people who dared to doubt.

  • One of the most influential works of deist and freethinking literature in the English language

  • Written while Paine was in a French prison, expecting to be guillotined any day

  • Cost Paine his standing in America, where he was vilified as an atheist (though he was not)

About the Author

Thomas Paine (1737–1809) was an English-born American political activist, philosopher, and revolutionary. Born in Thetford, Norfolk, he emigrated to the American colonies in 1774 with the help of Benjamin Franklin. His pamphlet Common Sense (1776) galvanized the American Revolution, and Rights of Man (1791–92) defended the French Revolution against Edmund Burke's attacks. The Age of Reason was published in two parts (1794, 1795) while Paine was imprisoned in France during the Reign of Terror. The book's attack on organized religion and the Bible destroyed his reputation in the United States, where he was denounced as an atheist (though he was a deist who believed in God). Even his former friend Benjamin Franklin refused to associate with him. Paine died in New York in 1809; only six mourners attended his funeral. His remains were later disinterred and lost. In the 20th century, his reputation was partially restored, and he is now recognized as a crucial figure in the history of democratic and secular thought.
