Whereof one cannot speak—simply told.

In Simply Wittgenstein, James C. Klagge presents a clear and accessible guide to the ideas of Ludwig Wittgenstein, whose work transformed the study of language, logic, and meaning in the twentieth century. Within its concise and engaging structure, the book illuminates both the rigor and the subtlety of a philosophy concerned with what can—and cannot—be said.

Klagge traces Wittgenstein’s early work in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, where he sought to define the logical structure of language and its relation to the world, as well as his later Philosophical Investigations, which shifted toward the ordinary uses of language in everyday life. Concepts such as language-games, forms of life, and the limits of expression are introduced with clarity, revealing a thinker who moved from strict formalism to a more fluid and human-centered understanding of meaning.

This is not a book for philosophers alone. It is an invitation: a guide for the curious reader who has heard of Wittgenstein but does not know where to begin. Klagge walks the reader through the essential ideas—from the picture theory of meaning to the famous duck-rabbit, from private language arguments to the bewitchment of language by intelligence—and the man who famously declared that “whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.”

  • A clear and accessible introduction to Wittgenstein’s life and major works, from the Tractatus to the Philosophical Investigations

  • Explains key concepts: language-games, forms of life, the limits of expression, and the critique of private language

  • Perfect for first-time readers and for those who want to understand one of the twentieth century’s most original and elusive thinkers
