The man who gave us Scrooge, Oliver, and David—simply told.

Charles Dickens is one of the most beloved and enduring writers in the English language. But the man behind the page was as complex, driven, and contradictory as any character he created. In Simply Dickens, acclaimed scholar Paul Schlicke offers an accessible and engaging introduction to the novelist’s remarkable life and work.

From his traumatic childhood in a London blacking factory to his meteoric rise as a global literary celebrity, from his relentless philanthropy to his disastrous marriage and secret mistress, Schlicke traces the experiences that shaped Dickens’s fiction. He explores the novels themselves—Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, and more—unpacking their social critique, their unforgettable characters, and their enduring relevance. This is not a dry academic study but a warm, insightful portrait of a man who believed that literature could change the world—and proved that it could.

This is Schlicke at his most lucid and inviting: a biography and critical introduction rolled into one, perfect for newcomers and longtime fans alike. Simply Dickens reminds us why, nearly 150 years after his death, we still cannot get enough of the man who asked for more.
