The deaf genius who changed music forever—simply told.

Ludwig von Beethoven, whose name for many is synonymous with classical music, composed some of the greatest music of all time while struggling with numerous personal difficulties, including a loss of hearing for much of his adult life. In Simply Beethoven, Professor Leon Plantinga explores the life and work of this monumental figure, placing him in his historical and cultural context, and offering non-musicians a revealing insight into his revolutionary and human-centered music.

Plantinga traces Beethoven’s development from his early years in Bonn through his emergence as a virtuoso pianist and composer in Vienna. The study examines his three major stylistic periods—the early classical works, the heroic middle period (including the Eroica Symphony and the Fifth Symphony), and the late, transcendent masterpieces (the Ninth Symphony, the late string quartets, the Missa Solemnis). Key concepts such as symphonic development, motivic transformation, and the expansion of musical form are explained in clear, accessible language. The study also considers Beethoven’s personal struggles—his growing deafness, his troubled relationships, his failed loves—and how these hardships shaped the urgent, defiant character of his music.

This is not a book for musicologists alone. It is an invitation: a guide for the curious listener who has heard the opening notes of the Fifth Symphony but wants to understand how Beethoven changed the very idea of what music could be. Plantinga walks the reader through the essential works, the key innovations, and the man who, unable to hear, composed some of the most powerful and human music ever written.
