About the Author

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832–1910) was a Norwegian writer, poet, playwright, and social thinker who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903. A central figure in the development of modern Norwegian literature, he was known for works including Synnøve Solbakken, A Happy Boy, and Beyond Human Power. Bjørnson used fiction and drama to explore questions of morality, social justice, democracy, and human dignity. Alongside Henrik Ibsen, he is regarded as one of Norway’s most important literary figures and a major voice of nineteenth-century European literature.
