Reason, passion, and the forces that shape who we are.

In A Treatise of Human Nature, David Hume sets out to understand human beings by examining the mind itself. Written while he was still in his twenties, this ambitious work asks how we form ideas, develop beliefs, make moral judgments, and decide how to act. Hume argues that much of what we think and do is driven not by pure reason but by feeling, habit, experience, and desire. He explores the nature of perception, the origins of our belief in cause and effect, the role of the passions, and the foundations of morality and justice. Bold and deeply skeptical, the Treatise challenged traditional assumptions about human nature and helped establish Hume as one of the central philosophers of the Enlightenment.

  • Hume’s major philosophical work, first published in three books between 1739 and 1740
  • Examines the mind, perception, ideas, belief, causation, emotion, morality, and justice
  • Argues that human thought is grounded in experience rather than abstract reason alone
  • Develops Hume’s influential account of the passions and their role in human behavior
  • Challenges traditional ideas about personal identity, free will, and the foundations of morality
  • A foundational work of modern empiricism and one of the most important texts in Western philosophy

About the Author

David Hume (1711–1776) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, and essayist and one of the most important thinkers of the Enlightenment. His work transformed debates about knowledge, causation, morality, religion, and human nature. His major philosophical works include A Treatise of Human Nature, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, and An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals. Hume’s emphasis on experience, habit, and human psychology had a profound influence on later philosophy, including the work of Immanuel Kant and the development of modern empiricism.
