Kurt Smith

Kurt Smith is a professor of philosophy at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. He specializes in early modern philosophy, with a particular focus on Descartes and the history of metaphysics. His publications include The Descartes Dictionary and numerous articles on Cartesian philosophy, the mind-body problem, and the relationship between philosophy and science. Smith is known for his clear, accessible writing style and his ability to make complex philosophical ideas understandable to non-specialists. In Simply Descartes, he draws on decades of teaching and research to offer an engaging and reliable introduction to one of the most important thinkers in Western history.

Philosophers have done a spectacularly poor job at engaging the public. Typically, scholars like myself write for scholars like myself. Exclusively in-house stuff. In the days of Bertrand Russell — so, mid-20th century — it was common for professors of philosophy to give public talks. But most of the books and journal articles written by professional philosophers are written for professional philosophers or for their students. The general reader gets short shrift.
