The Man Who Accused a Republic: New Revised Edition of Alan Strauss-Schom’s Definitive Biography of Émile Zola Arrives September 29

New York, NY — August 18, 2026 — Before the word “intellectual” became a public role, Émile Zola made it one. With a single open letter published on the front page of a newspaper, he confronted the French military establishment, challenged the wrongful conviction of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, and helped place the French Republic itself under a searching public indictment. On September 29, 2026, the 124th anniversary of Zola’s death, Vita, Casa Carlini’s biography and memoir imprint, will release the print edition of Alan Strauss-Schom’s landmark Émile Zola: A Biography, the essential account of a writer whose life joined literary ambition, political courage, and moral consequence. The ebook edition is available now from Amazon and other major retailers.

First published in 1987, Émile Zola: A Biography remains essential reading nearly four decades later. Strauss-Schom follows Zola’s rise from difficult beginnings to his position as the leading French novelist of the late nineteenth century, a central theorist of naturalism, and a public figure willing to pay a personal price for justice. His vast Les Rougon-Macquart cycle reshaped the social novel; his 1898 letter, “J’accuse,” became one of the most consequential acts of literary and civic intervention in modern French history.

Published in L’Aurore, “J’accuse” defended Alfred Dreyfus, the Jewish army officer wrongfully convicted of treason, and accused the French military of concealing the injustice. Zola’s intervention intensified public debate over the Dreyfus Affair and carried grave consequences: he was convicted of libel, sentenced to prison, fined, and eventually fled to England. His decision to speak made clear that the responsibilities of a writer could extend beyond the page.

Upon its original publication, Strauss-Schom’s biography was widely praised for its authority, insight, and narrative force. Auberon Waugh wrote in The Independent, “Dr. Schom can claim to have written a definitive biography.” Martin Seymour-Smith called it “an essential book,” writing that “no one can hope to understand Zola, one of the most important writers of all time, without having read this study,” and praised it as “a joy to read.” Julian Symons, writing in the Sunday Times, described the biography as “an efficient, thorough... illuminating study.” Anita Brookner of The Observer called it “a good, sane introduction,” while Peter Quennell in the Financial Times described it as “a solid, yet well-constructed book.”

The new revised edition features a cover by Jenny Lim, a recent graduate of California State University, East Bay. Lim combines a striking black-and-white photograph of Zola by the famed Paris photography studio Cautin & Berger with a reproduction of the author’s own signature, rendered in warm gold as the title treatment. The design presents Zola not as a remote monument of French letters, but as a figure of intelligence, pressure, and resolve—linking the force of his public life to the distinctly personal mark of his hand

“Zola understood that a writer’s words can have consequences beyond the literary world,” said Charles Carlini, founder of Casa Carlini. “Alan Strauss-Schom’s biography reminds us that his greatness was not confined to the novels. Zola was willing to risk his reputation, freedom, and safety in the name of truth. That combination of artistic achievement and civic courage makes his life more urgent than ever.”

Émile Zola: A Biography by Alan Strauss-Schom will be released in print by Vita on September 29, 2026. The ebook edition is available now through Amazon and other major retailers.
