Born in 1898, Remarque is remembered above all for All Quiet on the Western Front, the 1929 novel that became one of the best-known and most representative literary works about World War I. Drawing on his experience as a German soldier who was wounded during the war, he wrote with a cool, unsentimental clarity that made the daily brutality of trench warfare feel immediate and unforgettable. The covers for this new Carlini Classics series were designed by Jenny Lim, a recent graduate of California State University, East Bay. Across the English and German editions, Lim uses stark imagery, restrained typography, and a muted wartime palette to create a unified visual language of exhaustion, memory, and aftermath. The illustrated face of the soldier in All Quiet on the Western Front gives the series an immediate human presence, while the photographic treatments of The Road Back, Im Westen nichts Neues, and Der Weg zurück emphasize solitude, survival, and the haunted stillness that follows combat.

“Remarque understood that war does not end when the shooting stops,” said Charles Carlini, founder of Casa Carlini. “Its deepest damage is often carried inward—into memory, language, and the struggle to return to ordinary life. These books remain essential because they tell that truth without adornment.”
