An ancient evil. A sinister inheritance. A creature lurking beneath the English countryside.

When Adam Salton returns to England from Australia, he is welcomed into the mysterious world of his distant relative, Richard Salton, and the quiet countryside of Derbyshire. But beneath the peaceful landscape lies a terrifying secret connected to an ancient legend and a monstrous creature known as the White Worm. As strange events unfold and the sinister Lady Arabella March reveals her true nature, Adam and his allies find themselves confronting a force that threatens everyone around them.

First published in 1911, The Lair of the White Worm is Bram Stoker's final novel, a bizarre and atmospheric blend of Gothic horror, folklore, and supernatural suspense. Drawing on ancient legends and the imagery of monstrous serpents, Stoker creates a disturbing tale of hidden evil, obsession, and the thin boundary between civilization and the unknown.

Readers will discover:

  • An ancient supernatural threat: A legendary creature hides beneath the English countryside, waiting to emerge.
  • A chilling villain: Lady Arabella March is one of Stoker's most unsettling and memorable creations.
  • Gothic atmosphere: An isolated estate, mysterious disappearances, and strange occurrences build an atmosphere of mounting dread.
  • Folklore and ancient legends: The novel draws on myths of monstrous serpents and buried forces that survive across generations.
  • A final work of horror: Stoker pushes Gothic fiction into stranger and more disturbing territory in his last novel.

Strange, unsettling, and unlike almost anything else in Stoker's body of work, The Lair of the White Worm is a fascinating conclusion to the career of the author who gave the world Dracula. Its mixture of ancient mythology, monstrous horror, and Victorian anxieties makes it a compelling read for anyone drawn to the darker corners of Gothic literature.

About the Author

Bram Stoker (1847–1912) was an Irish novelist best known for Dracula, one of the most influential works of Gothic horror ever written. Born in Dublin, he worked as a civil servant and later managed London's Lyceum Theatre, where he became closely associated with actor Henry Irving. Stoker's fiction frequently explores the collision between modern life and ancient, mysterious forces. His other works include The Jewel of Seven Stars and The Lady of the Shroud.
