An isolated castle. A mysterious woman. A legend that refuses to die.
When young Englishman Rupert Sent Leger inherits an estate in the remote Balkan principality of Vissarion, he encounters a world of ancient customs, political intrigue, and unsettling legends. His life takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious woman, believed by villagers to be a supernatural being, appears at his castle. First published in 1909, The Lady of the Shroud blends Gothic romance, mystery, and political adventure as Bram Stoker explores the tension between tradition and modernity, the struggle for national independence, and the possibility that what seems supernatural may have a more earthly explanation.
Readers will discover:
- A mysterious woman: A strange visitor challenges the boundary between folklore and reality.
- Gothic romance: An atmosphere of secrecy, suspense, and unexpected affection drives the story.
- Political intrigue: A small Balkan nation struggles to defend its independence against outside threats.
- Tradition and modernity: Ancient beliefs encounter science, technology, and changing social values.
- A different side of Bram Stoker: The author of Dracula delivers an adventurous tale that combines romance, speculative fiction, and national drama.

Its combination of romance, political adventure, folklore, and technological speculation makes it a distinctive novel for readers interested in Gothic fiction and the imaginative possibilities of the early twentieth century.
About the Author
Bram Stoker (1847–1912) was an Irish novelist best known for Dracula, one of the most influential works of Gothic horror ever written. Born in Dublin, he worked as a civil servant and later managed London's Lyceum Theatre, where he became closely associated with actor Henry Irving. Stoker's fiction frequently explores the collision between modern life and ancient, mysterious forces. His other works include The Jewel of Seven Stars and The Lair of the White Worm.
