War, peace, and the search for meaning—simply told.

In Simply Tolstoy, Donna Tussing Orwin offers a clear and thoughtful guide to the life and work of Leo Tolstoy, one of the most influential figures in world literature. Within its concise structure, the study presents both the scope of Tolstoy’s fiction and the philosophical questions that underpin it.

Orwin traces Tolstoy’s development from his early writings to his major novels, including War and Peace and Anna Karenina, examining how they engage with themes of morality, free will, family, society, and spiritual transformation. The study also considers Tolstoy’s later religious and philosophical writings, in which he reflects on ethics, simplicity, and the search for truth beyond conventional institutions.

This is not a book for Tolstoy specialists alone. It is an invitation: a guide for the curious reader who has heard of the Russian giants but does not know where to begin. Orwin walks the reader through the essential novels, the key ideas, and the man who gave up his fortune, his estate, and eventually his family in the pursuit of a simple, truthful life.
