Invisible Links
The threads that bind us cannot be seen. But they can never be broken.
Selma Lagerlöf's Invisible Links is a luminous collection of short stories that explores the unseen forces—fate, memory, love, and guilt—that connect human lives across time and space. First published in Swedish as Osynliga länkar in 1894, it marked a turning point in Lagerlöf's career, winning her a traveling scholarship that allowed her to give up teaching and devote herself fully to writing.
The collection weaves together folk legend, historical drama, and poignant tales of ordinary life, often set in the forests and villages of Lagerlöf's native Värmland. In "The Spirit of Fasting and Petter Nord," a mischievous boy's encounter with a hidden banknote forces him to confront the conflict between desire and moral obligation. In "The Legend of the Bird's Nest," a parable of sacrifice and redemption unfolds in the natural world. "The Outlaws" and "The Legend of Reor" draw on ancient Scandinavian lore, while "Valdemar Atterdag" and "A Fallen King" explore the weight of history and the vanity of power.
Other stories—"Mamsell Fredrika," "The Romance of a Fisherman's Wife," "His Mother's Portrait"—turn inward, examining the quiet tragedies of family, aging, and unspoken love. The collection closes with "Among the Climbing Roses," a tender meditation on memory and loss.
This is Lagerlöf at her most magical and humane: a collection that established her reputation as a master of the short story and anticipated the themes that would define her Nobel Prize-winning career. Invisible Links is a perfect introduction to a writer who believed that the most powerful forces in life are the ones we cannot see.
