About the Author

Jonathan Swift (1667–1745) was an Irish-born writer, satirist, essayist, and clergyman whose wit and imagination made him one of the great voices of eighteenth-century literature. Best known for Gulliver’s Travels and A Modest Proposal, Swift used humor, irony, and satire to expose the absurdities of politics, society, and human behavior. His writing remains remarkably fresh because beneath the jokes are questions about power, reason, morality, and the peculiar ways people behave.
