About the Author

Grazia Deledda (1871–1936) was an Italian novelist and one of the most important literary voices of the early twentieth century. Born in Sardinia, she drew inspiration from the island’s landscapes, traditions, and social customs to create deeply human stories about fate, morality, family, and personal struggle. In 1926, Deledda was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for her writings, which captured “the life of her native island” with profound sympathy and artistic power. Her works, including Canne al vento (Reeds in the Wind), Ashes, and Elias Portolu, remain celebrated examples of Italian literary realism.
