About the Author

Pearl S. Buck (1892–1973) was an American novelist, translator, and humanitarian whose life and work were deeply shaped by her childhood in China. The daughter of Presbyterian missionaries, she grew up speaking both English and Chinese and drew extensively on her experience of Chinese society in her writing. Her best-known novel, The Good Earth, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932, and in 1938 she became the first American woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. She wrote more than seventy books and was also an active advocate for interracial adoption, civil rights, and greater understanding between Asia and the West.
