What can we really know? And how do we know it?
In An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, David Hume examines the foundations of human knowledge and asks how far reason can actually take us. He begins with a deceptively simple question: where do our ideas come from? From there, Hume investigates cause and effect, experience, belief, probability, miracles, and the limits of human reason. His famous analysis of causation challenges the assumption that we directly perceive necessary connections between events, arguing instead that our expectations are largely formed by habit and repeated experience. Written in clear, direct prose, the Enquiry remains one of the most accessible introductions to Hume’s philosophy and one of the most influential works of modern skepticism and empiricism.

About the Author
David Hume (1711–1776) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, and essayist and one of the most important thinkers of the Enlightenment. His work transformed debates about knowledge, causation, morality, religion, and human nature. Alongside An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, his major works include A Treatise of Human Nature, An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, and The History of England. Hume’s skeptical approach to reason and his emphasis on experience had a profound influence on later philosophy, including the work of Immanuel Kant and the development of modern philosophy of science.
