Peter L. Hays

Peter L. Hays is a distinguished scholar of American literature with a special focus on Ernest Hemingway. A professor emeritus of English, Hays has spent decades studying Hemingway’s life, manuscripts, and literary legacy. His publications include numerous essays and books on Hemingway’s work, including The Critical Reception of Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and Fifty Years of Hemingway Criticism. In Simply Hemingway, Hays draws on a lifetime of scholarship to provide an engaging, accessible, and deeply informed introduction to one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century.

Hemingway rarely proselytized. Having lived through the propaganda surrounding the First World War, he eschewed editorializing. Aldous Huxley said of Hemingway's writing, the meaning is all in the white spaces between the lines. A lot is open to interpretation.
