The publishing life

Building a home for books that stay with readers.

Charles Carlini is the founder and publisher of Casa Carlini, an independent publishing house based in New York City and devoted to books that linger on the shelf, in the mind, and in conversation. Drawing on a lifelong engagement with literature, philosophy, history, science, biography, and ideas, he has shaped Casa Carlini into a home for thoughtfully curated works that challenge, illuminate, and endure.

Under his leadership, Casa Carlini brings together classic texts, contemporary writing, and rigorous nonfiction across a family of focused imprints, each guided by a commitment to clarity, craft, and intellectual seriousness. From revived literary classics to boundary-pushing essays and works in translation, the list is united by a belief that the most meaningful books are those that stay with readers long after the last page is turned.

Casa Carlini remains deliberately small and independent, allowing Charles to be closely involved in every stage of the publishing process, from acquiring manuscripts and shaping lists to refining covers, typography, and formats for print and digital readers. His aim is simple and exacting: to build a list of titles that reward close reading, invite rereading, and earn their place in a personal library.

“The most meaningful books are the ones that remain in conversation with the reader.”
How Casa Carlini works

Small by design. Exacting by choice.

Casa Carlini stays close to the work, from the first reading of a manuscript to the finished book in a reader’s hands.

01

Choose with intention

Charles builds a list across literature, history, philosophy, science, biography, and ideas, selecting work for the depth and durability of the conversation it can begin.

02

Make books with care

He remains closely involved in every stage of publishing: acquiring manuscripts, shaping lists, refining covers, typography, and formats for print and digital readers.

03

Let the work last

The aim is not to chase the noise of the moment, but to publish titles that reward close reading, invite rereading, and earn a place in a personal library.

Beyond the page

Bringing creators and audiences together.

Alongside his publishing work, Charles runs Decibel, a nonprofit music company that presents concerts and represents artists, extending his longtime commitment to bringing creators and audiences together in thoughtfully curated settings.

That experience in programming live performance and supporting artists informs his editorial approach at Casa Carlini: to publish books with intention, design them with care, and let them find their way into the right hands over time rather than chase the noise of the moment.

Through his lens

Wandering, wondering, and paying attention.

When he is not immersed in running Casa Carlini, Charles is traveling the globe with his trusty iPhone—wandering, wondering, and capturing moments along the way. A growing selection of those photographs can be seen at Shot by Carlini.
