Alan Strauss-Schom

Publisher will re-release the acclaimed author‘s Napoleonic histories, military biographies, and literary portraits, alongside his forthcoming memoir this fall

New York, NY — July 9, 2026 — Independent publishing house Casa Carlini today announced the landmark acquisition of exclusive worldwide publication rights to the collected historical and biographical works of renowned historian and New York Times bestselling author Alan Strauss-Schom.

Following the formal reversion of copyrights to the author, the definitive Strauss-Schom catalog will join Casa Carlini's dedicated history imprint, Storia. The acquisition includes his celebrated Napoleonic works, deeply researched military histories, and acclaimed literary biographies, previously published by houses including HarperCollins, Oxford University Press, and W. W. Norton & Company.

“Alan Strauss-Schom is a titan of narrative history, blending rigorous archival research with the pacing of a master novelist,” said Charles Carlini, Publisher of Casa Carlini. “Bringing his catalog into the Storia imprint aligns perfectly with our mission to curate world-class historical scholarship. Works like Napoleon Bonaparte: A Life and The Shadow Emperor redefined how a generation understood 19th-century Europe. We are honored that Mr. Strauss-Schom has entrusted Casa Carlini and Storia with the stewardship of his life's work.”

The acquisition encompasses several of Strauss-Schom‘s most influential and critically acclaimed titles:

  • Napoleon Bonaparte: A Life — The sweeping, New York Times bestselling biography that challenged decades of historical consensus surrounding the French Emperor.
  • The Shadow Emperor: A Biography of Napoleon III — A vivid, definitive psychological portrait of France‘s final monarch and his turbulent era.
  • The Eagle and the Rising Sun: The Japanese-American War, 1941–1943 — A meticulously detailed account of the critical early years of the Pacific War theater.
  • Trafalgar: Countdown to Battle and One Hundred Days: Napoleon's Road to Waterloo — Twin masterworks of military history, exploring the naval and terrestrial bookends of the Napoleonic Wars.
  • Émile Zola: A Biography — A profound exploration of the life, literature, and political courage of the legendary French novelist.

Under the Storia imprint, Casa Carlini is planning a multi-tiered re-release strategy, rolling out newly updated digital eBook editions, premium trade paperbacks, and newly commissioned unabridged audiobooks across global retail channels beginning in late 2027.

In addition to the catalog re-release, Casa Carlini will publish Strauss-Schom‘s memoirs, The Swallows of Montafia: An Historian's Memoirs, this fall, offering readers an intimate, first-person account of the life, travels, and archival pursuits behind his celebrated body of historical work.
