He was the philosopher who believed the mind was a machine, and then spent decades proving it wasn’t quite that simple.


In the formidable tribe of 20th-century analytic philosophers, Jerry Fodor stood out as both a technician and a heretic: a man who built theories with the precision of a computer scientist, but who never fully trusted the blueprints. He was the architect of the modular mind, a founding figure in the philosophy of cognitive science, and a fearless critic of the very theories his field came to adore. Equal parts acerbic and erudite, Fodor was a gadfly among naturalists, a dualist’s nightmare who nonetheless refused to believe that thought could be reduced to neurons firing in the dark.

His prose was unlike most of his peers’—lively, ironic, and often laugh-out-loud funny. Yet beneath the levity was a mind steeped in rigorous formalism. Fodor took minds seriously. Not just as metaphysical puzzles or as meat-and-circuit simulations, but as sites of real explanatory depth. He wanted psychology to be a science. But not, as he often said, at the expense of psychology.

The Bronx Begins

Jerry Alan Fodor was born in 1935 in New York City, in the Bronx, a borough that would later echo faintly in the brass and bite of his prose. He was the son of Jewish parents, and though his early environment was not especially intellectual, it was richly verbal. Like many children of his generation, he was shaped as much by radio voices as by classroom instruction, and perhaps more by the arguments of daily life than by its rituals.

He entered Columbia University at the age of 16, already suspicious of easy answers. There he studied philosophy and classical languages before pursuing graduate work at Princeton, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1960. His dissertation was on intention and perception, topics he would spend the next five decades refining, resisting, and rethinking.

Fodor came of age intellectually just as behaviorism was retreating from psychology, and analytic philosophy was tightening its grip on Anglo-American thought. But unlike many of his peers, he refused to choose between the two. He wanted a psychology that had explanatory power and philosophical rigor, a discipline that could talk about beliefs and desires without flinching or blushing. He found his voice early, and rarely revised it: sharp, skeptical, syntactically athletic, and committed above all to intellectual honesty.

The Language of Thought

Fodor’s best-known contribution came in the form of a bold, deceptively simple hypothesis: that thinking takes place in an internal language, a “language of thought,” or mentalese. The idea, introduced in his 1975 book The Language of Thought, was that cognition doesn’t just emerge from neurons or sensory experience, but from the manipulation of symbolic representations—structured, rule-governed, and compositional.

To understand how the mind works, Fodor argued, one must understand its syntax and semantics, just like understanding a spoken language requires grasping its grammar and meaning. Mentalese wasn’t English or Mandarin; it was a computational lingua franca of the mind, in which beliefs, desires, and intentions could be encoded and operated upon algorithmically.

The theory was bold. It helped launch the cognitive revolution, bridging philosophy, psychology, computer science, and linguistics. It offered a way to save intentionality—the aboutness of thought—from the flattening reductions of behaviorism. Fodor’s mind wasn’t a Skinner box. It was a Turing machine with content.

But if Fodor gave cognitive science one of its most generative metaphors, he also gave it one of its fiercest critics.

The Modular Mind

In The Modularity of Mind (1983), Fodor proposed that the mind is not a monolithic processor, but a set of specialized, domain-specific modules. Vision, language, and certain forms of perception are handled by distinct sub-systems—fast, automatic, and encapsulated from the rest of cognition.

It was, as he admitted, a “modest proposal.” But its implications were enormous. Modularity offered a way to reconcile the success of empirical psychology with the intractability of the mind-body problem. If perception could be compartmentalized, then perhaps some parts of the mind could be studied scientifically, even if others (like belief formation or moral judgment) remained stubbornly opaque.

Evolutionary psychologists loved it. They expanded modularity to everything from mate selection to moral intuitions. Fodor was horrified. His modules were narrow, not sprawling. They were meant to constrain explanation, not license baroque tales of Stone Age adaptations. He accused the field of “reverse engineering from nowhere.” When colleagues turned his idea into dogma, he turned into its sharpest critic.

His writings, especially his later essays, are full of this performative dismay: a scholar watching his intellectual children go feral, then chasing them down with footnotes and wit.

The Unbearable Lightness of Darwinism

Fodor's greatest—and most controversial—provocation came late in life. In 2010, with co-author Massimo Piattelli-Palmarini, he published What Darwin Got Wrong. The title was not subtle, and neither was the content. The book argued that natural selection, as typically construed, is not a coherent scientific theory. Its central mechanism—selecting traits through environmental fitness—is, according to Fodor, tautological and causally impotent.

The reaction was swift and severe. Biologists accused Fodor of ignorance. Philosophers accused him of undermining his own legacy. He clarified that he did not reject evolution, only the mechanism of selection as it was commonly understood. His argument was part technical, part philosophical: if traits are coextensive (think “heart pumps blood” and “heart makes thump-thump sound”), how can selection isolate causes from side effects?

The book is imperfect, and the critique underdeveloped. But the impulse behind it is pure Fodor: to ask, always, whether an explanation is truly explanatory, or just a story we happen to like.

Fodor was not a creationist. He was a contrarian. And he believed that even the most sacred cows, especially them, ought to be tested for coherence.

Why Fodor Still Matters

Fodor’s work straddles an era in which philosophy of mind transformed from armchair speculation to interdisciplinary powerhouse. He helped make it a science, then refused to let science drift into dogma. His critiques of connectionism, eliminative materialism, and post-Chomskyan linguistics were not nostalgic grumblings. They were technical arguments delivered with a smile and sharpened by wit.

In a world increasingly dazzled by AI, where minds are often treated as code and cognition as a dataset, Fodor’s cautionary voice is essential. He reminds us that explanation must not only model the outputs but respect the inputs—the messy, structured, content-rich states that make thought possible.

He also reminds us that philosophers can be funny, and that precision need not come at the expense of style. Fodor once compared himself to Groucho Marx in a seminar room: “I wouldn't want to belong to any philosophical movement that would have me as a member.” It was a joke, but also a credo.

He died in 2017, still reading, still arguing, still amused by the unsteady project of understanding ourselves. His ideas live on in the cognitive sciences, in the minds of those who find the brain too rich to reduce, and in the footnotes of scholars still trying to outwit him.
