We mourn the loss of Stephen Gaukroger, a distinguished historian of philosophy and science who passed away on September 3, 2023. Gaukroger’s profound scholarship illuminated the intellectual landscapes of early modern philosophy and science, establishing him as a leading voice in the field. His work on figures like René Descartes and Francis Bacon and his ambitious multi-volume history of the sciences have left an indelible mark on our understanding of how science and philosophy evolved together to shape Western thought.

Stephen Gaukroger's legacy includes his acclaimed books on Descartes, such as Descartes: An Intellectual Biography and Descartes' System of Natural Philosophy, which reshaped interpretations of Descartes' philosophical and scientific contributions. Through his work, Gaukroger revealed how Descartes and other early thinkers laid the foundations for scientific culture, bridging philosophy and natural science in ways that continue to resonate today.
