Book Formatting Intern
Location: Fully Remote
Duration: 10–12 weeks (Summer/Fall 2026, flexible to align with academic calendar)
Hours: 15–20 per week, accommodating your class schedule
Casa Carlini is a fiscally sponsored, mission-driven independent publisher through Fractured Atlas, based in NYC and dedicated to amplifying literature through digital innovation. Transform manuscripts into beautiful books! We’re seeking a Book Formatting Intern passionate about interior design to prepare files for print and ebook using Vellum.pub (Mac-only software).
This unpaid educational internship follows U.S. Department of Labor FLSA guidelines, prioritizing your learning as the primary beneficiary with hands-on training tied to your formal education (academic credit required). Mac OS required for Vellum compatibility.
Format 4–6 manuscripts (front/back matter, chapter layouts, typography, drop caps) for print (IngramSpark specs) and ebook (epub/mobi).
Receive structured training in publishing production (trim sizes, bleed, widows/orphans, reflowable ebook standards) with iterative feedback like classroom critiques.
Test proofs, collaborate on design decisions, archive project files; work complements our team under close supervision.
Enrolled in publishing, graphic design, or related program; must have Mac OS and be able to receive academic credit.
Familiarity with book layout principles; Vellum.pub experience ideal but we’ll train; strong attention to detail and typography sense.
Passion for books/production, organized, open to feedback for remote Zoom/Trello collaboration.
Portfolio-ready formatted books credited on casacarlini.com and retailers.
Stipend-eligible via school programs (e.g., Barnard BBIP, Duke Funding, CUNY Magner)—include details in applications.
Mentorship from publishing pros, free books, references; flexible remote hours in a book-loving team. No paid role entitlement post-internship
How to Apply: Email resume, Mac screenshot confirmation, relevant sample (formatted document/page), and brief note on book production to jobs@casacarlini.com. Subject: “Book Formatting Intern – [Your School/Program]”. Rolling review; start May/June 2026.
