Casa Carlini is a fiscally sponsored, mission-driven independent publisher through Fractured Atlas, based in NYC and dedicated to amplifying literature through digital innovation. Help give our books their visual identity! We’re seeking a Book Cover Design Intern to conceptualize and develop compelling covers and related visual assets that capture each title’s essence and attract readers.
This unpaid educational internship follows U.S. Department of Labor FLSA guidelines, prioritizing your learning as the primary beneficiary with hands-on training tied to your formal education (academic credit required).
Design or refine cover concepts for front, spine, and back covers across print and ebook editions (including typography, imagery, and layout).
Prepare production-ready files for print (IngramSpark or similar specs: trim size, bleed, color space, resolution) and digital (ebook thumbnails, online graphics).
Collaborate with the publishing team on visual direction, series branding, and A/B variations for different markets or platforms.
Adapt cover designs into coordinated marketing assets (social graphics, banners, thumbnails) and organize final files in shared archives.
Enrolled in graphic design, illustration, or related program; must be able to receive academic credit.
Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator (or equivalent professional software).
Strong eye for composition, typography, and visual storytelling; interest in books, literature, and cover trends.
Organized, communicative, and open to feedback for remote collaboration via Zoom/Trello/Google Drive.
Portfolio-ready book covers credited on CasaCarlini.com and with retailers where applicable.
Guided experience in real-world cover workflows, from concept sketches to approved production files, with iterative critiques.
Stipend-eligible via school programs (e.g., Barnard BBIP, Duke Funding, CUNY Magner)—include details in applications.
Mentorship from publishing professionals, free books, and references; flexible remote hours with a creative, book-loving team.
No entitlement to a paid role after the internship ends.
Email your resume, portfolio link (or PDF with 6–10 samples, preferably including at least 2–3 book, poster, or cover-style designs), and a brief note on why book cover design excites you to jobs@casacarlini.com.
